An Intro to Cosmetic Dermal Fillers: No They’re Not Botox!

Want to know how cosmetic dermal fillers work, if they’re right for you, what types there are, how long they last, how fillers differ from botox, and more? Get the scoop on all of this and more, in this intro article on cosmetic dermal fillers.

Since you’re reading this, chances are you have a basic understanding of the concepts and functions related to dermal fillers. But questions still linger in your mind, about how fillers work, how long they last, and when they should be used or if Botox should be used in its place. We’ll help you answer these questions, and more, to ultimately help you decide whether or not this particular (and popular) cosmetic treatment is appropriate for you.

What are Cosmetic Dermal Fillers Used For?

Cosmetic Fillers can be used to alleviate a wide variety of issues, related to physical facial aging, by:

• Enhancing lip volume to plump up and thicken thin lips
• Helping to augment sagging cheeks by optimizing shape and restoring a rejuvenated youthful look
• Filling in hollow areas (depressions in parts of the face, especially under the eyes, that result from aging
• Adding restorative volume and smoothing out creases resulting from aging (e.g. marionette lines around the mouth)
• Repairing severe facial and acne scars on the face, making them appear even with the rest of your face, and less manifest
• Increasing facial volume especially in the areas of the lower cheeks and temples, which most frequently happen from fat pads that move beneath the skin

How are Dermal Fillers Different From Botox?

Cosmetic dermal fillers work very differently from Botox. Fillers work by plumping up the areas treated and injected, to minimize wrinkles, depressions, and folds. Depending on the type of fillers used, brand, amount used, depth on injection, and other factors, cosmetic dermal fillers can last anywhere from three months to several years or more.

On the other hand, Botox doesn’t have the volumizing effect that fillers have. Rather than plumping up lips and volumizing hollow areas in the face, Botox (which is also injected) works by being injected into areas around the forehead and wrinkles surrounding the eyes to eliminate muscle movement that would lead to wrinkles.

Because of how differently they work, many people actually utilize treatments of both cosmetic dermal fillers and Botox to acquire a fresh younger look.

2 Types of Cosmetic Fillers: Natural & Synthetic

Cosmetic dermal fillers fall into two categories: natural and synthetic.

Natural Cosmetic Fillers

Fillers derived from natural compounds (the most widely used is Hyaluronic Acid – or HA) have a minimal risk of triggering allergic reactions from their users but extremely rare cases have been known to occur. Characteristics of natural fillers include:

• Immediate results
• Short life-span (typically from 3 to 18 months)
• Most patients need about one ‘follow-up’ dermal injection within the first year

Aside from rare allergic reactions, natural fillers also carry a minimal risk of lumping, although this happens rarely.

Synthetic Cosmetic Fillers

Synthetic dermal fillers are non-natural man-made compounds that last a lot longer than natural fillers. Some synthetic fillers are considered as ‘semi-permanent’ fillers simply because they really don’t go away.

As with any filler, synthetic fillers also have their risks which are the same as natural fillers except that, since synthetic fillers are almost permanent, this means that the potential risks may be longer lasting and harder to resolve with synthetic fillers.

Cosmetic Dermal Fillers – General Risks

The major problem for fillers is life-span and longevity. This is then followed by the minimal risk of lumping and rare allergic reactions. So it really all comes down to how skillful your doctor is at choosing the correct type of filler, choosing the correct amount, and then placing it in exactly the right places, as well as the initial evaluation and needs assessment.

This means you need to find a doctor or health professional who’s experienced and has been doing cosmetic fillers for a long time. If you happen to be in the Dearborn, Detroit, or Canton, Michigan area, make sure to contact Laserduet to get a free consultation with highly-experienced doctors and health professionals.

When to Get Cosmetic Dermal Fillers?

There are many reasons to give consideration for cosmetic dermal fillers to minimize and correct manifest signs of aging and help you look younger. They also go beyond the simple measures of creams and modern skincare since age, muscle movement, cell restoration, sun damage, and the simple experience of life will eventually take their toll. This is why fillers can definitely help you improve your look, improve the appearance of deep wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful look in a way skincare products can never do.

If you’re considering receiving cosmetic dermal fillers, the next step is to setup a consultation appointment with your cosmetic health professional to get an evaluation.
